took place over 48 hours on the 29-th and 30-th of April 2017

NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2017


Bulgaria will take part for the fifth year in NASA Intentional Space Apps Challenge. This is an event for mass collaboration, which is organised for the sixth year globally in the cities on all seven continents in the world.

This hackathon is part of a larger process of defining challenges relevant to earth and space, intensively working to prototype solutions, and subsequently refining and implementing the most promising prototypes.  The International Space Apps Challenge is a model for innovation. The ability to contribute towards solving meaningful challenges is the most important motivator for most participants in mass collaboration.

Everyone can participate. Hackathons are technology development marathons that draw on the talents and initiative of bright minded volunteers – programmers, developers, engineers, technologists, designers, and anyone with a passion and desire to have an immediate impact on the world. They are open to anyone who has a passion for making a difference and are focused on developing real solutions to global challenges.

  • Prof. DSc. Eng. Elena Shoikova

    Currently prof. DSc. Eng. Elena Shoikova is a professor at the State Uniwersity of Library Studies and Information Technologies. Until 2012 was a professor at the Technical University of Sofia. She is a holder of PhD and DSC degrees. She has significant post-qualification research experience (more than 35 years’ experience). Prof. E. Shoikova has wide experience in a leadership role in the Research Laboratory on E-learning Technologies and Standards at the Technical University – Sofia and research group at Virtech. Her scientific and teaching interests are in the following areas: interdisciplinary applied research and innovation in Technology Enhanced Learning, Cloud Computing; Open Educational Resources, Digital Repository, Knowledge Management; Social Computing Applications, SCORM, IMS learning Design, Competency-Based Education; Software Engineering, ECAD. Prof. Shoikova has been involved in more than 50 projects from FP, PHARE, TEMPUS, SOCRATES ERASMUS, LEONARDO DA VINCI, national and university programs. She features a demonstrated capability to exercise independence in research, as evidenced by senior authorship of publications and invited presentations at conferences(more than 240 research papers and books). Experience of successful supervision of PhD students and contributing to undergraduate project supervision and Masters dissertations on taught programmes.


  • Assoc.Prof. Dr.Doyno Petkov

    Deputy Director of the Institute for Space Research and Technology in BAS Member and Head of "International scientific cooperation programs" of BAS. He has also participated and managed many designs in the area of system analysis, design and computer applications (automation of scientific experiments) spectrometric measurements in remote sensing of the Earth and space, image processing and pattern recognition.


  • Svetlin Nakov Ph.D

    Svetlin Nakov inspires thousands of young people to start learning programming and technologies. He has 15+ years of experience as software engineer, IT project manager, trainer and consultant. Svetlin is an author of 7 books about computer programming and software technologies. He is a speaker at hundred conferences, seminars and training courses and an author of free video lessons about programming with 100000+ views. Svetlin holds the Bulgarian President award "John Atanassoff" for his contribution to the development of the information technologies and information society. His dream is to make Bulgaria the Silicon Valley of Europe


  • Aleksandar Nestorov

    Aleksandar Nestorov is a graduate from the American University in Bulgaria with Business Administration and Information Systems degrees. He has worked for the Olympic Games London 2012, HP Bulgaria and Vivacom. Since 2013 he is Marketing Manager for SAP in Bulgaria, as well as Global events team lead in CEE.


  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petko Ruskov

    Professor Dr. Eng. Petko Ruskov has a long and extensive practice as an entrepreneur, trainer and consultant in the field of computer engineering. His experience in the technological entrepreneurship field consists in teaching subjects such as "Technology Entrepreneurship" and other innovative courses at universities in Bulgaria. He works on issues and projects for research, development and commercialization of technology and supervisors PhD students. He consultants and mentors student teams to participate in national, European and world competitions for business plans and innovative companies, including Intel Challenge, BizBarcelona, JA-YE, NASA International Space Apps Challenge and etc. Dr. Ruskov is a member of BizBarcelona Global Nominating Committee, JA Bulgaria, SAI and other institutions. He participates in editorial boards and program committees of several national and international journals and conferences. He has published three books and over 120 publications in journals and conferences.


  • Asst. Prof. Ilin Savov

    He graduated the Bulgarian Police academy in 2007. In 2013 successfully defended dissertation: „Interaction and coordination between Specialized Department „field technical operations” and operating departments in Ministry of Interior and State Agency National Security in the implementation of special investigative techniques” and in 2015 acquires an academic title 'Associate Professor' in Higher School of Security and Economics, Bulgaria. He specializes in the implementation of special investigative techniques and security services. Asst. Prof. is author of several publications and reports related to the analysis of security services, human trafficking and the occurrence, status and development of the process of implementation and use of special investigative techniques. And the Monograph „Special Investigative Techniques”(2014). He is a lecturer in the Bulgarian Police academy and Head of Department „National Security and Public Order” in the Higher School of Security and Economics, Bulgaria.


  • Ph.D Nikola Ralev

    Anatoly Peshev has Master degree in Computer Systems and Technologies from Technical University – Sofia since 2010. In 2012 he successfully defends his PhD thesis in cloud computing and software as a service field. In the last 2 years he is actively teaching in SULSIT. Anatoly has over 10 years experience in developing, integrating and testing distributed and integrated solutions.

  • Ph.D Anatoly Peshev

    Nikola has many years of experience in various areas of software engineering ranging from mobile applications to SCADA systems for monitoring and control of industrial sites. As part of a team developing an innovative solution for distributed delivery of 'live online' video content, he wants to make HD streams available to everyone. 
    Nikola Ralev co-founded Setelis Labs llc., a Bulgarian company that provides software services and IT consulting.

  • Eng. Georgi Georgiev

    Head office Burgas TechnoLogica PLC, with over 8 years experience in design, development and implementation of information systems. NET, Web Forms, Windows Forms, WPF, WCF technologies, and Data Warehouse with Oracle RDBMS technology, APEX, Warehouse Builder, Data Integrator. Recently, with a particular focus on mobile platforms and hybrid solutions. Lecturer in various courses of Oracle, UML system analysis and management of requirements in the learning center TechnoLogica.


  • Assoc. prof. Veselina G. Jecheva

    Veselina G. Jecheva received her master degree in Computer Science and Economics from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1995. She received her PhD degree in Computer Science, especially Information Security from the National Laboratory of Computer Virology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, in 2005. She is an Associated Professor at Burgas Free University, Faculty of Computer and Technical Sciences, Bulgaria. Her research interests include information security, e-commerce, programming, Web systems.


  • Dr. Yordan Kalmukov

    Dr. Yordan Kalmukov receives his MSc in “Computer Systems and Technologies” at the University of Ruse in 2006. In 2014 he successfully defends a PhD thesis in the field of “Automated data processing and control systems”. In his thesis Yordan proposes a symmetric similarity measure between sets of concepts in a common taxonomy and a heuristic assignment algorithm that achieves accuracy of about 99% in comparison to the maximum-weighted matching algorithms but has better (quadratic) time complexity. Since 2012 Yordan works as an assistant professor at the University of Ruse, where he teaches students in web programming, information systems and computer vision. Since 2005 he is a secretary of the Programme Committee of CompSysTech – an international scientific conference, whose proceedings are published by ACM and indexed in Scopus. His research interests include information retrieval; data mining; databases and information systems; web applications and web services; cloud computing and distributed systems; image processing and computer vision; and others. Besides them Yordan has amateur interests in other areas of science and technology as well, including aviation and space. He has been awarded with several regional and national prizes. Among them: a “Golden sign” for his contribution to the Youth Innovation and Information Society, awarded by the Prime Minister of Bulgaria in 2007; “Student of the year” for Ruse district in 2006 and others.


  • Ivaylo Trifonov

    Ivaylo Trifonov got his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology at University of Sofia in 2007. In 2013 he successfully defended Master of Business Administration thesis in University of National and World Economy. Ivaylo has 5 years expiriance in developing, testing and leading Nokia’s GIS projects in DATECS. For the last two years he is working as a Business Analyst in Mobiltel.


  • Victor Danchev

    Victor Danchev coordinates the Space Challenges program. Other than Physics and Mathematics, his primary interests are the popularisation of science among other young people such as himself, and its applications in Space studies, he study Theoretical Physics at Sofia University.


  • Boris Chervenkov

    Boris Chervenkov is a software solutions architect at Paysafe - a dynamic and growing company with a broad spectrum of fintech products and services. Boris' professional career spans more than 20 years and includes development of traffic analysis and transit control solutions, electronic admistrative services, systems integration, teaching and IT consulting services.


  • Iliya Goranov

    Занимавам се с компютри от малък, което през 80те не беше толкова популярно сред децата, колкото е сега. Работя в сферата на информационните технологии от 1999 г. Ръководител съм на отдел Уеб технологии в Информационно обслужване” АД, където работя от 15 години, а също така съм хоноруван преподавател в департамент Информатика на Нов български университет и докторант в Института по информационни и комуникационни технологии в БАН. В свободното време, което нямам, се занимавам любителски с автоматизация и микроконтролери.

Previously, she was a co-director for FI in Berlin and worked in business development with a Berlin startup, tech recruitment marketplace, Honeypot.io.   • Ph.D. Irena Valova

    Irena Valova, PhD, is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Systems and Technologies at the University of Rousse. In 2008 she obtained her PhD in the field of "Automated Information Processing Systems and Management" with a dissertation related to image databases. She has proposed a method for transforming complex image data into simpler structures and a model for internal rendering of image data in the database. The proposed color image description model does not require subjective factor intervention and brings information about global color characteristics and spatial relationships between objects in images.

    She teaches disciplines related to discrete structures and modeling, databases, information systems and computer vision.

    Her scientific interests include organizing, searching, retrieving and analyzing information; databases and information systems; cloud technologies; image processing and others.

    Registration will be available at the beginning of March and will continue untill 29th of April. All individuals who are attending will need to register online on: http://2017.spaceappschallenge.org/.

  • DO I NEED TO TAKE MY LAPTOP?

    Everyone can take his/her laptop. There will be some available, but may be not sufficient.

  • WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

    Everyone can participate - developers, engineers, technologists, designers, and anyone with a passion and desire to have an immediate impact on the world. They are open to anyone who has a passion for making a difference and are focused on developing real solutions to global challenges.

  • HOW THE TEAMS  CAN BE FORMED?

    Each team can be formed by one or more participants, it is recommended up to five members. The international collaboration is highly encouraged.

    Each one team will upload the projects through the main web site option using the username and password made at registration. This option will be available prior the event.

  • HOW THE PROJECTS WILL BE PRESENTED?

    The projects will be defended in front of the local judges. The teams can defend their idea with a presentation.
